Following dismissal today, a water pipe burst at the elementary school in the boiler room. The NYA Fire Department and Carver County Sheriff's Office responded to the alarm that was triggered. Everyone is ok, however we are assessing the damage, the availability of heat and water for tomorrow, and any other damage caused by this. I am messaging you now to say there is a possibility that we may have to cancel school for 2.17.21 at the elementary school only. All evening activities at the elementary school, including ECFE and 5th grade boys basketball, are cancelled for tonight. I will update you on the status of school tomorrow by 10pm tonight when I know more. There is a possibility we will be calling an "e-Learning" day. Kids Company families are encouraged to come pick-up their children as soon as possible as we do not have usable bathrooms at this time. Tim Schochenmaier Superintendent

Congratulations to Peyton Tietz and Hailey Buckentin for their 3rd place finish in Duo at our (Virtual) Albany Speech Meet on Saturday! Like everything this year, speech looks a little different. We are actually competing entirely virtually through a dedicated platform that looks a lot like zoom. The students are presenting their pieces to the judge in much the same way that teachers are presenting to their classes to the virtual students. What that looks like on the backside--as long as we have students in school, we will be bringing our team to school on Saturdays. We just won't travel anywhere. Students will hang out (socially distanced and masked of course) which will give them some of the social aspects of speech. Then each student will go to an individual classroom in our high school to compete. Each student will be assigned a classroom, for several equity reasons, and also if they are alone in the room, they will be able to take their mask off for the duration of their performance.

Today the kindergarten classes took part in one of their holiday traditions. In December, the kindergarten classes have always decorated gingerbread houses as a whole class. This year, teachers knew it had to look a bit different. With the help of some very generous individuals, all kindergarten students received a bag of individually wrapped candies, a tub of frosting, and a cardboard house. The students got to still decorate even though they weren't together in person. The kindergarteners also spent the morning perfecting their art skills and decorating a gift for a loved one.

Dear Central HS and MS Families, I want to thank you for your support and cooperation today as we had to quickly pivot to distance learning for the day and I’d like to update you for tomorrow. 6th-12th grade students will be back in session tomorrow and will pick up on the regularly scheduled day on the hybrid calendar. (Group A in person) Central was able to secure lunch service with our provider beginning tomorrow through Nov. 10. We will provide bag lunch option for free for any student who wants one. I’m going to be honest, this is going to be a very basic lunch: a pre-packaged sandwich, a fruit/veggie, and milk. Again, thank you to families for the ability to move plans quickly and we look forward to getting students back here tomorrow. In Partnership, Timothy Schochenmaier Superintendent

Carver County Public Health concluded all kitchen staff at the HS and MS are considered "close contacts" and need to quarantine for 14 days. Central Schools students in grades 6-12 who were scheduled to attend in person tomorrow will be at home for the day, Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020. Because we are not able to offer lunch tomorrow, we are not able to be in session per guidance from our Regional COVID Support Team. I am working with our food service company and they have a plan in place to resume bag lunches beginning Wednesday. Please note that a-la-carte will not be available until Nov. 10, the same day our hot lunch program will resume at the MS and HS. I want to reiterate that this one day distance learning is not due to exposure to students or staff. Staff will still need to report for work, students will still be able to participate in sports and after school activities regularly scheduled for tomorrow. This does not affect the elementary in any way. Elementary students will have regular class tomorrow. I'm sorry for any stress this may cause families. Tim Schochenmaier Superintendent

Greetings Middle School and High School Families, As we continue to progress through the year and become more familiar with our hybrid learning model, we wanted to send out some additional attendance information so that our parents, students, and school staff are on the same page regarding our hybrid model. For our hybrid learners, the expectation is that students who are scheduled to attend classes in person on a given A or B day should physically be in those classes. **Students cannot just decide to work from home on a given day. ** Teachers will be taking in class attendance based on which day (A or B) it is, and marking student's attendance accordingly. For instance, if a student is supposed to be in class on a given day, but has chosen to work from home, the student will be marked absent unexcused. It is important to make sure that all our students are following their proper schedules so that our attendance and record keeping is as accurate as possible. As always, if your child needs to be absent for an excused reason (dental appt., dr. appt., college visit, etc....), we ask that parents continue to call the office and excuse their student, as in the past. This will help us continue to manage our attendance practices as we move through the school year. Thank you, Tom Erickson High School Principal Ron Erpenbach Middle School Principal

Winter has arrived it seems. That may have been one of the shortest falls I can remember. I just chalk it up to 2020! The weather actually is the reason for my message today as I have a bit of an unusual request. On Friday, our football team is supposed to host a game at Central High School. As I am writing this, there is about 4 inches of heavy snow on the varsity field and the turf is not yet frozen. This combination of circumstances makes it so we can not bring snow removal equipment onto the field without doing thousands of dollars of damage to the turf. We have attempted to use snow blowers, it just pushes the snow. It is supposed to rain tomorrow and we hope it melts all the snow. If it doesn’t, I am asking any available citizen with a shovel and/or wheelbarrow to come to Braun Field at 5pm on Thursday, October 22 to assist in removing the snow by hand. We will be monitoring the situation and give an update at 4pm tomorrow on our Facebook page. If all goes well, we will be able to host the game at Central (Plan A). Central does have a back-up plan for the game. Jordan Public Schools has graciously offered to host our game at their site. They have artificial turf and are able to remove the snow. If our field is not in the condition to play or if we are unable to remove the snow, we will host our game at Jordan on Saturday time TBD (Plan B).

With winter weather sneaking up on us, there have been a number of questions regarding winter clothing requirements when out at recess. With safety in mind, below are the requirements as communicated to the students, teachers, and recess supervisors: ~All students should be wearing jackets, hats, and gloves in cold weather. ~We will be outside when the temperature and wind chill are above zero degrees. ~Kindergarten through second grade students will need snow pants and boots when there is snow on the ground. ~Students in third through fifth grade need to wear boots. For these grade levels, we will not require snow pants, although we still strongly suggest them. Students who are not properly dressed may be sent inside to get jackets, hats, and gloves. If you are having financial difficulties and providing winter clothing is not possible, please contact the elementary office and we will help you find available resources. Thank you for your cooperation. Mr. Michael Daugs Principal, Central Elementary School

Dear Parents, As you know, the state is currently contemplating how to safely reopen schools for the 2020-21 school year. In preparation for the state’s decision, all school districts have been required to prepare plans that address three possible scenarios: 1. A full return of students in all schools for in-person learning. 2. A partial return of students in some schools with a hybrid approach of distance learning and in-person learning. 3. No immediate return of any students and a continuation of distance learning. At this time we do not know which scenario will be chosen by the state. The Minnesota Department of Education has said that school districts should expect to receive specific guidance no later than the week of July 27. As part of our district’s planning, multiple subgroups have been formed to consider the instructional, operational and student/staff supports that will be needed in each of these three specific reopening scenarios. Central Schools is pleased to announce some exciting changes to our online presence. First, as of this morning, Central Public Schools has undergone an update to our website. The new web address is (www.isd108.org). Here you can find all the helpful information you did on our previous platform. If you have us bookmarked, please update your records. Secondly, as part of our update, Central has developed an App. You can find it in the Google Play or Apple App store by searching "Central Public Schools ISD 108". This is everything Central in your pocket. Easily connect to your child's teacher, view lunch menus, and follow all the updates from Central Public Schools in one handy spot. Be looking for "specials" at Raider events by showing the app on your phone for free items.

A perfect example of why the fans of Central, and all our conference opponents, are the best. Sportsmanship, humility, fair play, and learning are all things we can get behind. Well done student athletes, coaches, community members and parents!

6th grade science has been studying simple machines for the last two weeks. They have been talking about the mechanical advantage of using simple machines to make work easier to do. Each hour class has a task that they need to perform with the building of a Rube Goldberg machine using three simple machines for each of the groups. The groups have to work together with the group in front of them and also the group behind them. The tasks include shooting a basketball, throwing a baseball, and recycling a piece of paper.

Did you know we accept Applications for Educational Benefits for free and reduced-price school meal benefits at any time? School lunch is critical to student health and well-being, and ensures that students have nutrition they need throughout the day to learn. Research shows that receiving free or reduced-price school lunches reduces food insecurity, obesity rates, and poor health. #RAIDERPRIDE
